Gatehouse Road

Gatehouse Road runs from the western tip of Histon to the junction with the Oakington to Girton road (which is named Oakington Road at that point). Only the south-western half of Gatehouse Road is in Oakington parish, as the Oakington–Histon parish boundary crosses the road at the Beck Brook crossing.

Presumably referring to the gatekeeper’s house that stood at the level crossing with the Cambridge to St Ives railway at the Histon end of the road, the name ‘Gatehouse Road’ was officially designated in 2020. Prior to that the road had been known by a number of names including New Road, Gatehouse Lane, Meadow Road, Girton Road and Oakington Road.

The gatekeeper’s house and the ‘Girton Gates’ level crossing (Histon parish) in 1920. The resident gatekeeper around 1900 was George Adams, assisted by his wife. They lived in the black weatherboarded gatekeepers house, while the smaller stone building on the right of the photograph was the gatekeeper’s hut from where the gatekeeper controlled the gates while on duty. The house was occupied until around 1967, and demolished around January 1970. Image: Cambridgeshire Collection.
