Oakington has a rich history dating back to at least Saxon times, one of the earliest archaeological finds was that of three Saxon burials found by Alan Bloom while digging in the grounds of his nursery which is now Queens Way and the Recreation Ground. We now know it was part of a large Saxon cemetery that has been fully excavated which started back in 1993-4, when burials were found during the construction of the then new playground. Further excavations were carried out in 2006 prior to the new pavilion and sport MUGA construction. In 2010 the University of Central Lancashire started a series of summer digs ending in 2014 which fully excavated the area under the Recreation Ground, with a total of 124 burials .
